This project is an urban public library located in the Futian District of Shenzhen.
Unlike traditional libraries, the client envisioned this space not merely as a place to borrow books, but as a public space where citizens can learn, interact, and relax.
Therefore, during the planning process, we integrated reading areas, collaborative study zones, leisure and conversation areas, and private study spaces, with the aim of ensuring that users of all ages can find a space that suits their needs.
Shared Reading Area
Large communal reading tables are located in the center of the library, providing flexible spaces for individual study, group discussions, and temporary work.
The open-plan layout makes the entire area feel more spacious, while preserving the quiet atmosphere befitting a reading space.
Natural light streams in through floor-to-ceiling windows, making extended periods of reading and studying even more comfortable.
Main Study Area
The area by the window has been designated as the main reading and study space.
Abundant natural light reduces the oppressive feeling caused by artificial lighting and makes the entire library feel more open and bright.
A variety of table and chair arrangements cater to the needs of students, those studying on their own, and regular readers.
Interactive Reading Lounge
The most distinctive feature of the project is an open-concept reading and relaxation area.
Circular bookshelves encircle the entire space, serving both as a display for books and as an integral part of the interior design.
Plush sofas and modular seating provide readers with a more relaxed reading experience, while also accommodating community events, book clubs, and parent-child activities.
Community Lounge Area
Private Study Pods
To accommodate a variety of usage scenarios, semi-open study pods have been installed in the window-side area.
Compared to the open reading zone, this area offers enhanced privacy and a more focused environment, making it ideal for extended study sessions, remote work, or online meetings.
At the same time, the expansive windows ensure the space remains well-lit and offers excellent outward views.
Project Outcome
Upon the project's completion, the library will no longer serve merely as a venue for reading.
Through the integration of reading zones, study areas, relaxation spaces, and interactive zones, the entire facility is capable of accommodating a more diverse range of user needs, providing community residents with a public environment that is more open, comfortable, and vibrant.
